The goal is to create a kind of intelligent database for children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The work will be completed by the end of 1995. The prototype is currently used in about 150 hospitals in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Beside the normal "storing/boring" database we have added some smart features for quality control of the hospital and evaluation of the chronic disease of one patient. This is mainly done by a longitudinal survey of quality indicators related to diabetes; e.g., number of hypoglycaemic episodes, level of metabolic control of the patient and a quarterly overview of acute and chronic complications in the hospital. Metabolic levels of each patient are evaluated by a control card of the statistical process control. This card was espacially developed for patients with IDDM in the local departement of statistics.
