Concluding a list of advantages and disadvantages of those two
techniques. For more details on inspections see [Gilb94].
Advantages:
- All own developments can be tested with them.
- They can be used in an early stage of the development and for small
part of the software product.
- Not only weaknesses of the program are detected, but also of
the involved people. This can lead to a modest, and realistic
self-estimation .
- All participants learn from the mistakes made. This helps to avoid
those bugs in the future .
Disadvantages:
- High expenses? The working time -- including the hours needed
for the preparation -- of several highly qualified people is used up.
- Quarrel in the team can originate from criticism which is taken
or meant personally.
- The source code of purchased modules is not always available.
- It is difficult to reproduce those tests.
- They depend a lot on the participant's qualification,
self-confidence, and discipline.
- They might be a menace for the author . If this is
ignored people might start to offer resistance to those tests.
