Medication of Diabetes Mellitus

Insulin  injection  coordinated with diet , mealtimes, exercise, and constant testing of the blood glucose  level are -- at least up to now -- the only medication   for diabetes mellitus . IDDM patients have to receive injections at least daily. This does not cure diabetesgif, but it helps to live an almost normal life.

To help finding a cure  for diabetes mellitus, the World Health Organization  (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation  (IDF) organized a meeting of health professional representatives from nearly all European diabetes organizations. Several members of national health ministries joined this congress, too. In the end, they passed a declaration which is now known as the St. Vincent  declaration of 1989:

  1. Reduce new blindness  due to diabetes by one third or more.
  2. Reduce numbers of people entering end-stage diabetic renal failure by at least one third.
  3. Reduce by one half the rate of limb amputations for diabetic gangrene.
  4. Cut morbidity and mortality  from coronary heart disease in the diabetic by vigorous programs of risk factor  reduction.
  5. Achieve pregnancy outcome in the diabetic woman that approximates that of the non-diabetic woman.

They also stated that one of the first problems on the way to those goals  which should be solved, is the lack of information. They noticed that there has to be a way to compare data  from different hospitals. A medical database with a standardized form would solve these problems.
