Insulin injection coordinated with
diet , mealtimes, exercise, and constant testing of the blood
glucose level are -- at least up to now -- the only
medication for
diabetes mellitus . IDDM patients have to
receive injections at least daily. This does not cure
diabetes
, but it helps
to live an almost normal life.
To help finding a cure for diabetes mellitus, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) organized a meeting of health professional representatives from nearly all European diabetes organizations. Several members of national health ministries joined this congress, too. In the end, they passed a declaration which is now known as the St. Vincent declaration of 1989:
They also stated that one of the first problems on the way to those goals which should be solved, is the lack of information. They noticed that there has to be a way to compare data from different hospitals. A medical database with a standardized form would solve these problems.
