The History of DPV

In 1989 the first version of DPV was written under UNIX  in C , but after a short period of time it was noticed that this was a mistake. Lack of portability and the use of a self-constructed data structure were the main reasons for the failure of the first version. This version was designed for patients having IDDM , because those patients accumulate a huge amount of data during the progression of their chronic illness. The second version was started from scratch using dBASE  on a personal computer under MS-DOS . Due to the spreading of the dBASE file-format, statistic programs offered by several companies could then be used to analyze the exported databases. Additionally, a capability was added to this program to document the progression of patients having a different type of diabetes mellitus.

Currently a windows version of the program has nearly been finished. The main part of the program has been reused, and basically only the user interface had to be rewritten.
