The HbA-.7ex1c is measured in different ways, and it is often difficult to
compare the different results. Sometimes it is also wished to compare
data independently of the patients' age and sex. The SDS -- the
standard deviation score -- is used to solve this problem. For the
calculation of the SDS, the average and the standard deviation of
``normal'' people's values for the same measure is required. If
I is the individual value, M the mean of the
control values, and S the standard deviation of the same
group, the SDS is calculated in the following way:
Another value used, is the body mass index -- BMI. This value is
applied to indicate the amount of fat a body has stored. It is often
used to early detect a possible over weight. If a patient's height is
given in meters, and his weight in kilogram, his BMI is calculated this
way:
