Prof. Dr. Volker Schmidt
Das Arbeitsgebiet von Prof. Schmidt ist die Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie
und Statistik, insbesondere die stochastische Geometrie und räumliche
Statistik. Die entwickelten mathematischen Methoden werden bei
der stochastischen Raum-Zeit-Modellierung und statistischen Analyse
der morphologischen Struktur vom räumlich hochaufgelösten 2D
und 3D (Bild-) Daten angewendet. Dabei werden sowohl mikroskopische
als auch geographisch-kartographische Daten untersucht. In seinen
Forschungsprojekten kooperiert er nicht nur mit Mathematikern, sondern
auch mit Partnern aus anderen Bereichen der Wissenschaft bzw. der Wirtschaft und
Industrie, beispielsweise mit Biologen, Informatikern, Ingenieuren
und Medizinern bzw. mit Unternehmen aus der Telekommunikations- und Pharmaindustrie,
dem Maschinenbau und Straßenverkehrswesen sowie der
Versicherungswirtschaft.
Prof. Schmidt publizierte seine bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse in zahlreichen
Zeitschriftenartikeln, vgl. auch die unten beigefügte Liste der neueren Veröffentlichungen (seit 2000).
Viele dieser Veröffentlichungen
sind in enger Zusammenarbeit mit seinen Diplomanden und Doktoranden bzw. mit
Fachkollegen aus dem In- und Ausland entstanden. Dabei sind die
meisten Dissertationen und Diplomarbeiten, die derzeit von ihm betreut
werden, eingebettet in die interdisziplinäre Forschungskooperation des Institutes für Stochastik.
Außerdem ist Prof. Schmidt Mitautor
mehrerer Fachbücher über stochastische Prozesse und deren
Anwendungen. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist die 1998 erschienene Wiley-Monographie
"Stochastic Processes for Insurance and Finance"
